The Handy Manual
The Handy Manual, a magazine originating in the late 1800s, offers an assortment of random facts and statistics from its era. Tasked with redesigning the second edition in my print publication class, I chose to update the statistics for the modern day while still visually referencing the original time period. I decided to treat each page as a mini collage, blending modern photographic imagery with 19th-century illustrations to create a visual bridge between the past and present. With the option to reorganize the information in any way, I wanted to enhance the reader experience by addressing the original text's perceived disorganization. I arranged the facts into “People,” “Places,” and “Things,” assigning each category a distinct colored paper stock, making it easier to identify each section.
